Gingivitis  or bleeding gums ass its known develops when plaque,tartar and bacteria buildup on teeth and  causes red swollen and bleeding gums. 
If this is left untreated  it may lead to periodontitis ( a severe  gum disease that involves boneloss around the teeth).

How do you manage gingivitis
